Learning From the Learner: Designing Instruction From the Student’s Lived Experience

About

Designing Instruction From the Student’s Lived Experience What if instruction began with the learner, not the lesson plan? Too often, students are labeled before they are understood. Instruction is adjusted after failure instead of designed for access from the start. This course challenges that pattern. Learning From the Learner is a transformative professional development experience designed for educators who want to design instruction that truly responds to the students in front of them. Grounded in the S.T.U.D.E.N.T. Lens™ Framework, this course shifts the focus from fixing deficits to understanding lived experience, identifying barriers, and building purposeful access. In this course, you will learn how to: • Analyze a learner’s profile beyond surface data • Identify barriers before targeting skills • Interpret academic performance within context • Design student-centered learning plans • Justify instructional decisions from the learner’s perspective • Monitor progress without burnout or over-testing Through structured case studies, guided reflection, and applied design exercises, you will practice designing instruction that honors identity, strengths, environment, and long-term independence. This course is ideal for: • General education teachers • Special education teachers • Instructional coaches • School leaders • Educators seeking deeper, equity-centered design practices By the end of this course, you will not simply have new strategies, you will have a new lens. Instruction becomes more intentional. Data becomes more meaningful. Students become more understood. If you are ready to design with learners, not just for them, this course will guide the way.
